Bermudo Núñez (died c. 955), was a magnate from León and the first Count of Cea. He appears for the first time in 921 confirming a donation to the Monastery of San Benito in Sahagún from which it can be assumed that he was probably born near the end of the 9th-century. A loyal vassal of the Leonese monarchs, he confirmed several royal charters and appears with the title of Count from at least the year 950, governing as a tenente the Cea region from 939 onwards.

He appears for the first time in 921 confirming a donation to the Monastery of San Benito in Sahagún from which it can be assumed that he was probably born near the end of the 9th century.[1] A loyal vassal of the Leonese monarchs, he confirmed several royal charters and appears with the title of Count from at least the year 950, governing as a tenente the Cea region from 939 onwards.
He probably played a relevant role in the Battle of Simancas and after this victory of the Leonese troops, collaborated with his brother, Oveco Núñez, Bishop of León in the repoblación of Salamanca.[2]
Family origins
Although his filiation has not been confirmed, several hypotheses have been put forward. Medievalist scholar Margarita Torres Sevilla-Quiñones de León believes that he could have been the son of Nuño Ordóñez, a son of King Ordoño I of Asturias and brother of Alfonso III,[3] which, according to the author, would explain the rapid rise of this lineage and its proximity to the royal house.
According to another hypothesis, proposed by genealogist Jaime de Salazar y Acha, Bermudo would have been the son of a Nuño Vélaz (or Vela), a son of Vela Jiménez, Count of Álava, through whom the Vela lineage spread throughout the Kingdom of León which would also explain the Basque-Navarrese names in subsequent generations.[4][a]
Bishop Oveco Núñez in a charter dated 28 August 945, confirms several donations made by King Ramiro II of León to the Monastery of Sahagún, also confirming the charter his brothers Vela, Suero, Munio, Bermudo and Nuño Núñez, followed by some of the children of these brothers, including Fernando Bermúdez, son of Bermudo Núñez.[6] He also had a sister named Gontrodo who married Ansur Fernández, Count of Monzón, the parents of Queen Teresa Ansúrez, wife of King Sancho I of León.[7]
Marriage and issue
Count Bermudo Núñez married twice.[8] From his first marriage to Argilo, he was the father of:
Froiloba Bermúdez, the first-born, married Muño Flaínez before 947.
Fernando Bermúdez (died in 978), the second Count of Cea, inherited from his father and from his uncle Bishop Oveco.
Piniolo Bermúdez, who confirms, with his brothers Fernando and Jimena, a donation made by his father on 13 August 949 to the Monastery of Santiago de Valdávida.

Acerca de Bermudo Núñez, Conde de Cea (Español)
Bermudo Núñez (fallecido c. 955), fue un magnate leonés y primer conde de Cea. Aparece documentado por primera vez en el año 921 confirmando una donación en el monasterio de Sahagún lo que hace suponer que nació a finales del siglo IX.
Fiel vasallo de los monarcas leoneses, confirmó varios diplomas de los reyes siempre en un lugar destacado, ostentando la dignidad condal desde por lo menos el año 950 y ejerciendo la tenencia de las tierras de Cea desde 939.
Probablemente jugó un papel relevante en la batalla de Simancas librada en 937 y después de esta victoria de las armas leonesas, se encontró junto con su hermano Oveco Núñez, después obispo de León, en la repoblación de Salamanca.
Su filiación no ha sido confirmada aunque existen varias hipótesis. La medievalista Margarita Torres considera que fue hijo del infante Nuño Ordóñez, hijo del rey Ordoño I de Asturias y hermano del rey Alfonso el Magno, lo cual explicaría, según la autora, el rápido ascenso de este linaje y su cercanía a la casa real.
Otra hipótesis propuesta por Jaime de Salazar y Acha es que fue hijo de un Nuño Vélaz, quien sería uno de los hijos de Vela Jiménez, conde de Álava, a través de quien el linaje de los Vela se extiende por las tierras leonesas y también explicaría algunos de los nombres vascos en las siguientes generaciones.
En un documento del 28 de agosto de 945, Oveco Núñez, obispo de León, confirma unas donaciones hechas por el rey Ramiro II al monasterio de Sahagún, también corroborando el documento sus hermanos, Vela, Suero, Munio, Bermudo, y Nuño Núñez seguidos por algunos de los hijos de estos hermanos, entre ellos Fernando Bermúdez. También tuvo una hermana llamada Gontrodo Núñez, esposa de Ansur Fernández, conde en Monzón, padres de la reina Teresa Ansúrez, mujer del rey Sancho I de León.
El conde Bermudo Núñez contrajo dos matrimonios. De su primera mujer, Argilo, con quien ya aparece casado en 946, tuvo a:
Froiloba Bermúdez, la primogénita que casó antes de 947 con el magnate leonés Muño Flaínez. Su filiación se conoce por una donación de su hija Jimena al monasterio de Sahagún en 985 de una villa llamada Saloiro que dice que la heredó de su abuelo Bermudo Núñez.
Fernando Bermúdez (fallecido en 978), segundo conde de Cea, heredó de su padre y de su tío el obispo Oveco.
Piniolo Bermúdez, quien confirma, junto con sus hermanos Fernando y Jimena la dotación hecha por su padre el 13 de agosto de 949 al monasterio de Santiago de Valdávida.

Vela Bermúdez (fallecido después de marzo de 976), padre de Argilo, Nuño y del conde Bermudo Vélaz.
También pudo ser padre de otro hijo llamado Munio quien en 964 aparece con su esposa Filauria en una donación al monasterio de Sahagún.
