Poco después de que la familia de Lambert (y Plectrude) asesinara a Dodo, un doméstico de Pepin de Heristal y padre de la amante de Pepin, Alpaida, los parientes de Dodo asesinaron a Lambert en venganza, en su finca, la villa galorromana que se ha convertido en Lieja.
La versión católica romana oficial es que Lambert se convirtió en mártir por su defensa de la fidelidad conyugal, denunciando el enlace de Pepin con Alpaida, hija de Dodo, quien se convertiría en la madre de Charles Martel.
